iGEM began in January of 2003 with a month-long course at MIT during their Independent Activities Period (IAP). The International Genetically Engineered Machine competition (iGEM) is the premiere undergraduate Synthetic Biology competition. Student teams are given a kit of biological parts at the beginning of the summer from the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. Working at their own schools over the summer, they use these parts and new parts of their own design to build biological systems and operate them in living cells
The Entrepreneur and Business Strategy competition provides high school students the opportunity to create their own simulated business and show off the entrepreneurial skills they are developing. Consisting of three simulations, the competition challenges high school students at all levels. Finalists will also present their business strategy for judging.

The “OP”portunity Conference gives high school students the prospect to demonstrate excellence in academic pursuits. These competitions challenge the skills and abilities of students at all levels. The competition categories are: Computer, Math and Science.

The Science Bowl is a double elimination tournament-style academic competition that challenges and recognizes a student’s knowledge of science and mathematics. Regional science bowls are held across the country with the first place team winning an all expense paid trip to the National Science Bowl finals held in Washington, D.C. each spring.

The USA Biology Olympiad offers an opportunity for students to move beyond the classroom and engage in a competitive spirit at the international level. Currently nearly 10,000 talented students are enriched annually by participating in USABO. After two rounds of challenging exams, twenty Finalists are invited to a residential training program where they learn advanced biological concepts and exacting lab skills at Purdue University. Ultimately, four students earn the right to represent the USA at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), a worldwide competition involving student teams from roughly sixty countries.
Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing male, female and minority interest in science, creating a technologically-literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.

The NABT BioClub provides opportunities for students to share and promote interest in the biological sciences. The ACS ChemClub is a high school chemistry club that provides students with a unique opportunity to experience chemistry beyond the classroom. There are over 330 clubs across the United States where students participate in after-school activities, get involved in community building, learn about chemistry careers, enjoy social events, and better understand how chemistry plays a role in our everyday lives.
